Question: How can health systems ACTUALLY tackle the root causes of illnesses?
What are social determinants of health?
According to WHO, the social determinants of health (SDoH) are the non-medical factors that can influence our health. These social factors include employment, income, where you live, as well as policies or social norms that discriminate due to race, gender, and sexual orientation, among others.
What are we looking for?
In an essay (1500-2000 words) or a 5-minute video, share your ideas on how our health care system can address the social issues that can cause illnesses.
How can you submit?
- Essay: Send your essay in a pdf format to upstreamlab@smh.ca
- Video: You can submit your video to upstreamlab@smh.ca as:
- a private YouTube link to the video, or
- a google drive link to the .mov or .mp4 file
How will this be judged?
Your video or essay will be judged for creativity and your grasp of the subject matter.
