Steve Durant joined the Upstream Lab in October of 2021. He holds a PhD in Health Services Research from the University of Toronto, and completed a dissertation focused on mental health policy reform. Prior to joining the Upstream Lab, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Waterloo, where he contributed to studies of precarious work and employment during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has a strong interest in social determinants of health and equity research. At the Upstream Lab, Steve’s primary focus is a project to conduct a scoping review related to bias in machine learning applications in healthcare, and developing a guideline that draws on the literature as well as extensive engagement with professional and community stakeholders, as well as a multi-disciplinary study team. Steve is also supporting several other projects that involve AI in healthcare or literature reviews.
